Program Overview

The foundation of Data Science is built on statistics and computer science. Having a grounding in these two disciplines, along with seeing examples of applications to data analysis, provides the base to learn new methods and build expertise. The Data Science Foundations certificate creates the base on which to build professional skills in data science.

Requirements and Costs

General Certificate Requirements

  • A completed bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Statement of goals/purpose: share your professional, academic and personal goals and why you believe Colorado School of Mines is the best place to achieve those goals
  • Transcripts
  • Require previous courses in linear algebra, probability and programming at the undergraduate level
  • Students with strong records can be admitted provisional and can start the certificate once these requirements are completed
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • For international applicants or applicants whose native language is not English, please review the English Proficiency requirement

Prerequisite Courses

  • Programming and Data Structures (CSCI 261-262)
  • Linear Algebra (MATH 332)
  • Probability (MATH 334) or equivalent courses at another institution and earning a B grade or higher
