Jyoti Behura

Research Assistant Professor, Geophysics; Co-director, Center for Rock & Fluid Multiphysics

Jyoti BehuraDr. Jyoti Behura is a research assistant professor in the Geophysics Department and a co-director of the Center for Rock and Fluid Multiphysics. He is also the founder of Seismic Science LLC, a technology start-up that develops technology for addressing some of the most pressing imaging needs within the energy and health-care sectors.

Dr. Behura’s education, training, and work experience revolve around wave propagation, inverse methods, and data processing in general. More recently, he has branched out into fundamental R&D in machine learning as well as its applications specifically to the energy industry. He has a significant interest in rock physics of unconventional reservoirs and in physical modeling experiments. One of his publications published in Geophysics won an award, and he has been recognized on multiple occasions for his achievements, including being awarded the J. Clarence Karcher Award by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 2012 for his “significant contributions to the science and technology of exploration geophysics as author and researcher.”

At BP America Inc, he was primarily responsible for the successful development of the anisotropic waveform inversion software. Since then, he has written multiple software programs for seismic data processing and inversion at the Colorado School of Mines and at Seismic Science LLC. He is the PI on the NSF (EAGER) project on “Spatio-temporal Imaging of Mount St. Helens Magmatic System using Efficient Waveform Inversion of Earthquake Records”. He also is a Mines’ PI on the DOE SMART Initiative that is developing physics-based machine learning algorithms and workflow for real-time CCUS project management. Dr. Behura serves as the co-editor-in-chief for the Journal of Applied Geophysics and as an assistant editor for The Leading Edge.
